CHARACTER - Mariana
Mariana may seem sweet and gentle but as she is close becoming a teenager she can be emotionally unpredictable. One thing she loves about being a forest child is that she no longer has to do what adults tell her. I have given her messy hair tangled with leaves and twigs to help convey her (innocently) rebellious nature.
Mariana didn't always live in the forest. Keeping this in mind I designed her outfit to have elements of clothing from her former life in Puerto Rico. - Yep I just decided she is Puerto Rican... Mariana is fashion conscious. So whilst some of her clothing is hand made, she has carefully crafted the forest sourced materials to look like modern clothing.
I wanted Mariana to appear sweet and charming. So I tilted her head and raised her eyebrows, as if to say "How could you not adore me?". Although Mariana is still a child, she is practicing to be a teenager. I gave her a childish and over emphasised fashion model pose. It's an open and confident pose that also shows off her home made outfit.
To keep in mind when creating a hero pose for your character:
My main goal is to get the most important information about my character into the one hero pose.
What is their posture like? Unless a character is in the military or very nervous, they are unlikely to be standing perfectly straight up and down. If they are shy, maybe their back and shoulders are rounded. If they are forthright and determined their chest might be puffed up and shoulders back.
What would your character do with their hands naturally? - Perhaps your character is proactive and confident with their hands on their hips. Or against their heart because they are sensitive and caring.
What expression helps portray their personality? I most often draw my characters smiling in their hero pose. This is because I want my audience to engage with, and simply LIKE my characters. This leaves personality up to the eyes and eyebrows. A determined frown or cheeky eyebrow lift can add so much to creating a character your audience wants to get to know.
